Thjorsahver, Iceland/Arctic

At its source, the river Thjorsa - the largest river in Iceland – divides into many tributaries, which encircle a number of lakes lying close to each other. The subsoil in the highlands of Central Iceland is permanently frozen in places. As a result, melt-water cannot trickle away into the ground and collects in numerous depressions. (aerial view)
