The patterns on the ice masses of Skeidararjökull resemble artwork and result from the volcanic debris stored between the ice layers, which wind deposited in snow over many years during volcanic eruptions or during heavy storms when it blew the ashes over the glacier, which in turn sunk into it during the ice-forming process.
