The red earth pyramids rise 30 metres high. They are made of caked morain debris and will stay stable as long as they are protected from weathering by a large cap stone. If the stone falls, erosion will set in and the pillars will gradually turn into spiky pinnacles, then into cones and finally crumble away completely. (aerial view)
