John Day National Monument 01, Oregon, USA/Colours of the Earth

The ash masses that today form the yellow hills of the John Day National Monument were spewed out long ago by volcanoes that have since disappeared. The hot discharge deposited layer upon layer. These layers owe their bright yellowish colours to the weathered volcanic minerals. Rivers have cut deeply into this soft rock material. (aerial view)
