Laguna Roja, Andes, Chile/Colours of the Earth

It looks as if a giant emptied a bucket of red paint onto this plateau in the remote mountains of the Parinacota volcano region in northern Chile. The blood-red water that collects in the Laguna Roja has the temperature of 40–50 Celsius. The vivid colour is due to the thermophilic red algae that thrive at very high temperatures.(aerial view)
