These colourful limestone and marl layers, seen at the bottom of Piz Urlaun, were horizontally deposited during the Jurassic period  150 million years ago  off the the ancient European coast and were later tilted during the Alpine orogeny. Brown spar, an ferruginous variety of dolomite,  gives them the yellow and brown colour. (aerial view)
