Mendenhall Glacier belongs to the retreating ice masses of Alaska. In summer, it is soaked in meltwater. Dark debris becomes warm and causes ice to melt in the sunrays. Meltwater collects in runnels, swirls through the sinkholes into the ice and disappears inside the glacier. (aerial view)
