One of the highest, most famous and prominent peaks in the Alps, Matterhorn (4478 m) is a piece of Africa. Once upon a time the huge rock, formed to a horn by glaciers during the Ice Age, was a part of the primeval African continental base. During the Alpine orogeny it was shoved above the marine sediment layers off the European coast. (aerial view)
