Etna, Sicily, Italy/Volcanoes

Ash clouds shot up hundreds of metres into the air from the new crater that opened on the southern flank of Mount Etna during its renewed eruptions in October 2002. A blanket of volcanic ash coated not only the edge of the crater of the 3300 m high peak, but also the villages at its foot. (aerial view)
