MacKenzie Delta, Canada/Arctic

In summer, the MacKenzie Delta in the north of Canada is a huge and hardly accessible labyrinth of widely branching river arms and lakes. It lies in the the arctic permafrost area, which is deeply frozen all year round and thaws up only on the surface in summer. As the melt-water cannot trickle away into the frosty subsoil, it collects in countless small basins. (aerial view)
