Atacama Desert 02, Chile/Deserts

The landscape of the Sierra de Gorbea, a lonely volcanic desert in the Atacama desert which lies over 3,000 metres (about 10,000 feet) above sea level, looks like that of an alien planet. This mustard-yellow lagoon is one of many drainless salt lakes that lie in depressions between old lava streams. They are all different colours, depending on the mineral content of the seabed or the type of microorganisms living in the water. (aerial image)
