Lake Amadeus, Australia/Deserts

It is not exactly known why the sand islands in Lake Amadeus, situated in the Australian desert, are round. After the rare downpour of rain in this region, they are surrounded by water, which, in turn, gradually evaporates. The circular structure is maintained by the plants growing on the islands and stabilising the sand with their roots. (aerial view)
