The countless rounded coral islands of the Maldives form part of a submarine limestone plateau which is 1,000 metres thick and which is slowly sinking as a result of the movement of the Earth’s crust. At the same time the coral reefs beneath the surface of the sea grow upwards where the water is flooded with light, appearing on the surface as atolls with a central lagoon. (arial view)
