Chalbi Desert, Kenya/Patterns of the Earth

Large areas of this hot and dry region in the north of Kenya are covered in white patches. These are salt clay deposits, left behind when water collected after one of the rare rainfalls and then evaporated. These salt pans are probably why the nomadic Gabra people, who live here, gave this desert the name Chalbi, which means ‘sandy and salty’ in their language. (aerial view)
