Karlinger Glacier, High Tauern, Austria/Patterns of the Earth

The surfaces of glaciers appear white and grey in the summer, as the previous winter’s snow cover gradually melts away to reveal the deeply fissured perennial grey ice below.
The size and shape of these fissures are determined by the flow rate of the ice and the protrusions in the bedrock over which the glacier is slowly moving. (aerial view)
