Kawah Ijen, Java, Indonesia/Volcanoes

The volcano harbours an acid lake. The fumaroles that jet out of the crater wall of Kawah Ijen reach temperatures of 580 degrees Celsius. Pure sulphur is deposited around the exit holes in quantities large enough to support mining. Clouds of white steam hide workers chipping away lumps of the bright yellow mineral. (aerial view)
