Ideally, atolls are ring-shaped coral reefs, which surround a lagoon. These atolls measuring circa 100 metres in diameter, are situated in the middle of the large Ari Atoll, one of 26 big atolls of the Maldives, which themselves stretch many kilometres in diameter. (aerial view)
