San Juan River, Utah, USA/Water

The San Juan River, a tributary of the Colorado, cuts into the subsurface in huge meanders. On average the water flows at a rate of 60 cubic metres per second. When the floods come, this flow rate can increase 30-fold to almost 2,000 cubic metres per second. This is when the river’s powers of erosion are strongest. (aerial image)
